Author Buchanan Moncure and I taste and compare two California Petite Sirahs.
2009 Vicious Petite Sirah
Price: $9.99 at Total Wine
Sight: Dark purple
Smell: Asian spice, cherry
Taste: medium-bodied, saturated and exuberant, big cherry, pepper, long finish
2009 River Road Petite Sirah
Price: $12.99 at Total Wine
Sight: Even darker purple
Smell: mellow, vanilla, blackberry, ginger
Taste: quieter, inky full body, tannic, dark fruit
I think based on our analysis, you’ll find that we loved both of these wines pretty much equally, but for different reasons—Vicious is a boxer, and River Road is an architect.
